Quaker HIll Historic Preservation Foundation

The Quaker Hill Historic Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1992 by Bayard Marin to aid in the restoration and preservation of the Quaker Hill Historic District in Wilmington, Delaware.

The district dates back to the early 18th century, when Quakers such as William Shipley and Thomas West built the first residences in the area. During the Revolutionary War, Washington and Lafayette were quartered on Quaker Hill. Among those buried at Wilmington Friends Meeting are John Dickinson, signer of the Constitution, and Thomas Garrett, an abolitionist who worked with William Still and Harriet Tubman to conduct thousands of slaves to freedom.

Quaker Hill has been home to countless people who have dedicated their lives to improving the community and society at large. In this tradition, the Foundation strives to foster a growing appreciation of the rich social history and unique architecture of Wilmington's oldest residential neighborhood.

The Foundation has developed educational programs for children and adults to foster an appreciation of the history and architecture of Quaker Hill. For example, the HARTS Project created by the Foundation focuses teaching children ages 9-14 about historical preservation, art and community service through hands-on activities. The Foundation also hosts Underground Railroad workshops for children ages 6-14, which teach about the social history of Wilmington through discussions and art projects. For adults interested in learning more about the

Quaker Hill District, the Foundation offers both self-guided and guided tours of the neighborhood, including some landmarks such as the Wilmington Friends Meeting House, the Cathedral of St. Peter, the Tabernacle Full Gospel Baptist Church and occasionally residences.

The Quaker Hill Historic Preservation Foundation also regularly hosts special events, like architectural treasure hunts or fundraisers, and in 2000, raised $175,000 to help create “Whispers of Angels” a movie starring actors Edward Asner and Blair Underwood about two influential abolitionists on the Underground Railroad.

Bayard Marin is currently President of the Foundation and sits on the board of the Quaker Hill Neighborhood Association.
